This page checks live ADS-B data every minute for aircraft transmitting 7700, the transponder code for a general emergency. Squawk 7600 (radio failure) is counted alongside it.
That is the normal state of the sky. 7700 is rare — a handful of times a day worldwide — and most are resolved routinely.
7700 is the transponder code a crew sets to tell air traffic control they have an emergency and need priority handling. It is deliberately broad: a medical diversion, a pressurisation problem, an engine shutdown and a serious technical fault all use the same code. Most 7700s end with a normal landing at a nearby airport, and some are set in error or left running after the underlying problem clears. The full explainer covers 7500 and 7600 too.
Seeing an aircraft here is not evidence of what is happening on board. We publish only what the transponder broadcasts: code, position, altitude and speed.
